Crane Rigging Project Checklist

Crane Rigging Project Checklist

Use this planner to organize the project information that may be needed when crane rental and rigging responsibilities must be coordinated. It creates a copyable checklist covering the load, lifting points, pickup and placement positions, site conditions, personnel responsibilities and available documentation.

This tool does not calculate sling tension, working load limits, hitch capacity, center of gravity, rigging angles or whether a rigging arrangement is safe. Rigging design and lift execution must be handled by the qualified professionals responsible for the actual work.

What Should Be Confirmed Before a Crane Lift?

A useful rigging discussion starts with verified project information, clearly assigned responsibilities and an understanding of what is still unknown. The project team may need to confirm the load, lifting points, center of gravity, pickup and placement positions, site geometry, rigging scope and personnel responsibilities.

  • Verified load weight and dimensions
  • Manufacturer lifting points or approved lifting method
  • Center-of-gravity information where relevant
  • Pickup and placement locations
  • Working radius and required height
  • Who supplies rigging equipment
  • Who performs the rigging work
  • Signal-person and load-control responsibilities
  • Site access and crane setup conditions
  • Known obstructions and clearance issues
  • Available drawings, photos and project documentation

Why This Is a Checklist, Not a Rigging Calculator

Rigging calculations can depend on sling geometry, load distribution, attachment points, equipment ratings, hitch configuration, dynamic effects and other project-specific factors. An online marketing tool should not make those decisions from a few generic inputs.

This planner therefore focuses on gathering the information and responsibilities that need to be confirmed by the professionals planning the lift.

Who Supplies the Rigging?

Do not assume rigging is automatically included with crane rental. Depending on the provider and project, rigging equipment and rigging personnel may be supplied by the crane provider, the customer, a general contractor or a separate rigging company.

Clarifying that scope before scheduling reduces ambiguity about equipment, personnel and responsibility.

Useful Documentation for a Rigging Review

  • Manufacturer lifting diagram
  • Verified equipment or load weight
  • General arrangement drawing
  • Load and jobsite photos
  • Site plan
  • Previous approved lifting documentation where relevant
  • Project contact information for the party responsible for rigging

Crane Rigging Checklist FAQ

Does this tool calculate sling tension?

No. It does not calculate sling tension, working load limits, hitch capacity or other safety-critical rigging values.

Can this checklist approve a rigging plan?

No. It is an information-gathering tool only. Rigging design and lift approval remain the responsibility of the qualified professionals assigned to the project.

What if the center of gravity is unknown?

Flag it as unknown rather than guessing. The responsible project and rigging professionals can determine what additional information or evaluation is required before the lift.

Is rigging included with crane rental?

It depends on the provider and contract scope. Confirm whether rigging equipment, rigging personnel, signal-person responsibilities and other lift-support services are included or supplied separately.
