HVAC Crane Lift Planner

HVAC Crane Lift Planner

Use this tool to prepare the information a crane provider may need for a rooftop HVAC lift. Enter the equipment, building, access and scheduling details you know, then copy the generated project brief for your estimator, crane company or internal project file.

The planner does not select a crane or determine safe lifting capacity. Final crane size, configuration, rigging and setup must be confirmed for the actual lift.

What Information Helps With an HVAC Crane Quote?

Rooftop HVAC lifts are highly dependent on working radius and building geometry. A relatively light unit can still require substantial crane capacity when the crane must set up far from the building or reach over parapets, adjacent structures or other obstructions.

  • HVAC unit weight and dimensions
  • Building height
  • Distance from the likely crane setup point to the rooftop placement location
  • Pickup and landing positions
  • Available parking-lot, driveway or street setup area
  • Overhead utilities and other obstructions
  • Whether an existing unit must be removed
  • Number of units
  • Requested lift date and delivery timing

Why Existing-Unit Removal Should Be Included

If an old rooftop unit must be removed before a replacement is installed, include both lifts in the project brief. The lift sequence, pickup and landing positions, rigging and total service time may differ from a simple new-unit placement.

What Photos Should an HVAC Contractor Send?

  • Proposed crane setup area
  • Street, driveway or parking-lot access
  • Full building elevation from the crane side
  • Roofline and approximate unit location
  • Existing unit if it is being removed
  • New equipment or delivery vehicle when available
  • Power lines, trees, signs, canopies or nearby buildings

Photos can help with initial project review but do not replace a site visit or other project-specific evaluation where one is required.

Crane Setup in a Street or Parking Area

Some HVAC projects require the crane to occupy or affect a street, parking area, loading zone or other shared access area. Depending on the project and jurisdiction, additional authorization, parking restrictions or traffic-control measures may be required.

Include those constraints in the project brief rather than assuming they are part of the crane company’s standard scope.

HVAC Crane Lift Planner FAQ

What if I do not know the HVAC unit weight?

Do not guess. Check the manufacturer specifications, submittal, equipment documentation, supplier or delivery records where available.

Can the planner tell me what ton crane I need?

No. The tool prepares project information only. Final crane size depends on the actual unit weight, working radius, height, crane configuration, setup and the specific crane’s load chart.

Should I include the old HVAC unit in the quote request?

Yes, if the crane must remove it. Include the old-unit removal, replacement-unit placement and any differences in pickup or landing positions.

Does the crane provider install the HVAC unit?

Not necessarily. Crane operation and HVAC installation are separate scopes unless a specific provider explicitly includes both. Confirm which contractor is responsible for disconnecting, receiving, setting and reconnecting the equipment.
